Gardening: Egg-Bert the Hairy Egg

Ingredients:

| egg shell

Directions:
Objective: To teach kids the process of growing grass using an biodegradable egg shell.
Materials: an empty egg shell with only the top of it out (one per child), grass seed, soil and a marker.
Directions:
1. When cracking the egg, try to leave only the top open about the size of a quarter. Rinse it out gently.
2. Let the children draw a face on "Egg-bert" with marker. It is also fun to put googly eyes on them.
3. Have the children gently add soil to the egg to about 3/4 way up the egg.
4. The children put grass seed on top of the soil.
5. Water the seeds very lightly. Check the moisture every day.
6. Soon (about 4 to 7 days), the grass will be growing. Egg-Bert will getting hair! Grass seed is very hardy so it is easy to grow.
7. An an extension, have the children measure how long the grass/hair gets.
8. Plant Egg-Bert in your yard. Explain how the egg shell will biodegrade.
